Traxxas's Slash 2WD BL-2s is a 1/10 two-wheel-drive short course truck, sold ready to run with a BL-2s 3300 Kv brushless motor and a BL-2s speed control.
A 21T pinion drives an 83T spur, and 2.72:1 in the transmission gives a 10.75:1 final drive; Traxxas quotes 35 mph on a NiMH pack. It runs up to a 2S LiPo through a Traxxas High-Current plug, weighs 2.18 kg and uses 12 mm hexes. The shocks hold 30 wt oil. Both gears are 48P, so change the pinion and spur as a pair if you re-gear, and keep the factory pair for grass and loose dirt.
The kind of vehicle the maker sells it as. It sets what the car is built to do and which cars it is fair to compare it with.
Short course trucks copy full-size desert race trucks, with bodies that cover the wheels so they can bump each other without tangling.
Drive
Only one axle is driven, the rear on almost every 2WD RC car.
It is lighter and simpler, and it takes more throttle control on loose ground.
Power
A brushless motor has no brushes to wear, so it makes more power and runs more efficiently than a brushed one.
It needs a brushless ESC.
Build
Ready to run: built at the factory with the electronics installed.
Some come without a battery or charger; the maker's box contents say which.
Scale
The maker's nominal size compared with a full-size vehicle. It works more as a class label than a measurement.
A 1/10 monster truck is far bigger than a 1/10 touring car, so compare length and weight for real size.
This one is 578 mm long.
Part number
The maker's product number for this exact version.
A V2, a new color, or a kit instead of an RTR usually has a different number, and parts can differ between them.
Check it against your box or receipt before ordering parts.

Pinion
The small gear on the motor shaft. Fewer teeth gear the car shorter: quicker acceleration, lower top speed and a cooler motor. More teeth do the opposite.
On this car one tooth changes the gearing by about 4.8%.
A bigger pinion loads the motor and ESC harder, so check the maker's gearing chart and feel the motor temperature after a run.
Spur
The large gear the pinion drives. A bigger spur with the same pinion gears the car shorter.
Pinion and spur must have the same pitch, or tooth size, to mesh.
The Gearing parts table below shows this car's pitch and part numbers.
Transmission & axle
Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears.
It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur.
Spur ÷ pinion
Spur teeth divided by pinion teeth: the part of the gearing that a pinion or spur swap changes.
Here it is 3.952:1.
Final drive
How many times the motor turns for one turn of the wheels. A higher number is shorter gearing: more acceleration and pulling power, less top speed.
Among 1/10 short course trucks in the catalog, the middle half run between 10.2:1 and 12.4:1 on stock gearing; this one is 10.8:1.

Wheels & tires
Tire diameter
The outside diameter of the mounted tire, tread to tread. A taller tire covers more ground each turn, which gears the car taller.
At high speed tires can balloon and grow, so the real gearing gets taller as the car goes faster.
Rollout
How far the car moves for one turn of the motor: tire circumference divided by final drive.
It lets you compare gearing across different tire sizes; more rollout is taller gearing.
Here it is 31.9 mm.
Wheel hex
The hex on the axle that the wheel locks onto and is driven by. A wheel must match the hex size to fit.
12 mm is the common size on 1/10 cars, so most 1/10 wheels fit; offset and width still vary.
The wheel nut is a separate size, so check its thread too before buying nuts.

Suspension
Shock oil
The oil in the shocks slows how fast the suspension moves. Thicker oil settles the car more slowly and resists bottoming out; thinner oil lets the wheels follow bumps.
Front and rear run the same oil on this car, so both ends respond alike. Changing one end at a time is the usual way to shift the balance.
It is graded in wt here. A wt number is the oil maker's own grade and differs between brands, so match the brand, or use the oil maker's chart to convert.

Power
Motor
RPM per volt with no load on the motor. Higher KV spins faster on the same pack; lower KV on more cells can reach the same RPM with less current.
On 2S (7.4 V nominal) this motor spins about 24,420 rpm with no load.
Under load the real RPM is lower.
Motor shaft
The diameter of the motor's output shaft. A pinion's bore, the hole in its middle, must match it.
3 mm is slightly smaller than the 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) shaft on many motors, so choose pinions made for 3 mm.
Battery
The highest LiPo cell count the maker rates the electronics for. Each cell is 3.7 V nominal and 4.2 V fully charged.
2S is 7.4 V nominal and 8.4 V off the charger.
Running more cells than this risks the ESC and motor.
Many cars also run on fewer cells, only slower.
Stock motor
The motor fitted at the factory, as the maker names it.
Stock ESC
The electronic speed control. It feeds power from the battery to the motor as you work the throttle, and usually powers the receiver and servo too.
An amp figure in its name is normally the maker's continuous rating.
Set its low-voltage cutoff for LiPo, so a pack is not run flat.
Battery connector
The plug on the battery lead. Your battery needs the same plug.
An adapter works, but it adds resistance and another joint that can work loose.
Traxxas's plug is its own. Packs from other makers need the same plug fitted or an adapter.
Battery space
The biggest pack that fits the tray, as the maker states it: length and width, and height where given.
Compare it with the pack's case size, not its capacity.
Allow room for the leads.
Water resistance
What the maker says about water, in its own words.
Waterproof electronics survive splashes, puddles and wet grass; they are not meant to be submerged.
After a wet run, dry the car and check the bearings, which rust.

Performance
Theoretical top speed
Motor RPM times rollout, worked out on 2S at nominal voltage with stock gearing.
It assumes no load, no battery sag, no wheel slip and no drag, so read it as a ceiling for comparing setups.
A GPS usually reads below it; the gap is load, battery sag, tire slip and drag.
Motor speed
The motor's RPM with no load: KV times pack voltage.
Under load it drops, which is one reason real speed is lower than the theoretical figure.
Advertised top speed
The top speed the maker claims.
Makers often quote it with optional gearing, a bigger battery or a fully charged pack, so read their wording before comparing it with another car's claim or with the calculated figure.

Size & weight
Weight
The vehicle's weight as the maker states it.
The maker does not say whether it includes a battery.
More weight takes more power to accelerate and lands harder on the parts; it changes top speed very little.
Length
Overall length as the maker states it, usually with the body fitted.
Useful for comparing real size, since scale labels are loose.
Width
Overall width as the maker states it, usually with the body fitted.
A wider car is more stable in corners and harder to roll over.
Height
Overall height as the maker states it, usually with the body fitted.
Useful when checking it fits a shelf, a bag or a car trunk.
Wheelbase
The distance between the front and rear axle centers. A longer wheelbase is steadier at speed and over bumps; a shorter one turns more tightly.

How to read these figures
Stock is as the vehicle ships.
Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
The top speed is kinematic: an ideal no-load RPM with no slip and no loss under load, so a real car is slower.
The maker advertises 35 mph, which is their own claim on their own conditions.

About teeth, pitch and bore
Tooth counts are the ones in the specifications above.
Pitch is given as metric module (Mod 1, Mod 0.8) or diametral pitch (32P, 48P). They are different standards and are not interchangeable, even where the numbers look close.
Bore is the pinion’s hole, listed separately from the motor shaft (3 mm on the stock motor).
