Specs

Traxxas's Slash 2WD Unassembled Kit is a 1/10 two-wheel-drive short course truck that the owner builds, with a Titan 12T 550 brushed motor and an XL-5 speed control.

A 16T pinion drives a 90T spur, and 2.72:1 in the transmission gives a 15.30:1 final drive; Traxxas quotes 30 mph on a NiMH pack. It runs up to a 2S LiPo through a Traxxas High-Current plug, rolls on 109.2 mm tires and uses 12 mm hexes. The shocks hold 30 wt oil. Both gears are 48P, so change the pinion and spur as a pair if you re-gear.

How to read these figures
  • Stock is as the vehicle ships.
  • Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
  • Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit, or does not have one, like a KV rating on a brushed motor.

About teeth, pitch and bore
  • Tooth counts are the ones in the specifications above.
  • Pitch is given as metric module (Mod 1, Mod 0.8) or diametral pitch (32P, 48P). They are different standards and are not interchangeable, even where the numbers look close.
  • Bore is the pinion’s hole, listed separately from the motor shaft (3 mm on the stock motor).

How these numbers were settled

The kit's assembly manual (p. 10) fits a 16T pinion to the Titan 12T motor, and the parts list sets the 16T pinion (2416) and the 90T spur (4690) in regular type.

  • The product page prints 'Gear Ratio (Internal): 2.72', so the final drive is 90 divided by 16 times 2.72, or 15.30:1.
  • The owner's manual of the ready-to-run Slash 2WD XL-5 (58234-8) lists the same two gears and marks 15.30:1 as its out-of-box setup.
  • The page also prints 'final drive: 9.05', which matches neither the kit's gears nor that chart, so it is not used.
  • The XL-5 ESC takes 4 to 7 NiMH cells or a 2-cell LiPo, so the maximum is 2 cells.
  • The motor is brushed, so there is no KV rating.
  • The tire is the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 (6871), which the parts list sizes at dual profile 4.3x1.7 in, so 109 mm.
  • Traxxas quotes 30+ mph with a 7-cell NiMH battery without naming the gearing, and it is shown here as the claim for the stock gearing.
  • The page prints a weight of 4.81 pounds (2.18 kg), the same as the brushless version with a different motor, so no weight is shown.
  • The page prints a battery compartment of 165 x 49.5 x 23 mm or 25 mm, so the tray height is left blank.
