Specs

Traxxas's TRX-4 Crawler Kit is a 1/10 four-wheel-drive crawler kit that the owner builds, with a Titan 21T brushed motor, an XL-5 HV speed control and a two-speed transmission shifted from the radio.

An 11T pinion drives a 45T spur, which gives a 25.85:1 final drive in high gear and 64.64:1 in low gear. It runs up to a 3S pack through a Traxxas High-Current plug, weighs 2.91 kg and rolls on 117.9 mm tires. Both gears are 32P, so a smaller pinion gives more crawling torque and a larger one more speed.

How to read these figures
  • Stock is as the vehicle ships.
  • Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
  • Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit, or does not have one, like a KV rating on a brushed motor.

About teeth, pitch and bore
  • Tooth counts are the ones in the specifications above.
  • Pitch is given as metric module (Mod 1, Mod 0.8) or diametral pitch (32P, 48P). They are different standards and are not interchangeable, even where the numbers look close.
  • Bore is the pinion’s hole, listed separately from the motor shaft (3 mm on the stock motor).

How these numbers were settled

The kit's assembly manual shows the 45T spur gear in the transmission bag (p. 8) and an 11T pinion on the Titan 21T motor (p. 28), with the 11/45 position marked as the default, and the parts list sets the 11T pinion (6747) and the 45T spur (8053) in regular type.

  • The kit manual does not print the transmission constants.
  • The manuals of the ready-to-run TRX-4 and TRX-6 trucks, which use the same 8053 spur, print x 6.32 for high gear and x 15.8 for low gear, so those constants are applied here and the 25.85:1 high gear and 64.64:1 low gear are worked out from them.
  • High gear is shown as the final drive and low gear as the low range, switched from the radio.
  • The product page prints a 4.64 x 1.89 in (118 x 48 mm) tire size, so the tire is 117.9 mm.
  • The XL-5 HV ESC is described as 3S LiPo capable (manual p. 2), so the maximum is 3 cells.
  • The motor is brushed, so there is no KV rating.
  • The page prints a battery compartment of 23 mm or 26 mm high, so the tray height is left blank.
  • Traxxas's TRX-4 comparison chart lists the TRX-4 chassis kit (82016-4) at the same 11/45 gearing.
