The Super Hotshot (2012) returns to the more extensively equipped Hotshot derivative introduced in 1986. The silver body, gold-colored wheels and four yellow CVA oil dampers make the specification clear. Beneath them, the transversely mounted motor drives front and rear differentials through a shaft system. It remains an assembly kit with the characteristic enclosed central chassis and period suspension geometry. Tamiya model information (opens in a new tab)

Its equipment changes the starting point for upgrades. Tamiya specifies ball bearings throughout the gearbox and axles, individual oil dampers and a GT-Tuned brushed motor. The drive and propeller shafts use the revised dogbone arrangement. A generic recommendation to buy bearings or replace every damper overlooks parts that are already included; inspect and service that equipment before replacing it. Compared with the Hotshot's linked monoshocks, one damper per wheel gives this edition a more familiar suspension service routine. The manual offers spring adjustment and matched motor-mount arrangements for alternative pinions. It is worth using those settings before choosing complete aluminum shocks or a faster motor. The enclosed chassis still needs room for the chosen electronic speed controller and wiring, and a power conversion is a packaging project as well as a motor purchase. Current owner discussions include both extensive modification plans and advice to retain the CVA dampers. The kit already has a substantial equipment package, so the useful first question is which behavior needs changing. Damper condition, spring setting, steering movement and tire choice can each affect the car without requiring a complete rebuild. Build the stock car first, then change the component associated with a specific handling or wear problem. Owner discussion (opens in a new tab)
The kind of vehicle the maker sells it as. It sets what the car is built to do and which cars it is fair to compare it with.
Buggies are low, light off-road cars built for jumps and fast corners on dirt, clay or turf tracks.
Drive
All four wheels are driven. That gives more grip under power, especially on loose ground.
The cost is more parts to maintain.
Power
A brushed motor carries current through carbon brushes that rub on the commutator.
It is cheaper and smooth at low speed.
The brushes wear and the motor loses power over time.
Build
A kit you build yourself from parts.
Most kits come without motor, ESC, servo, radio and battery, and many without tires or a painted body.
The manual lists what to add.
Scale
The maker's nominal size compared with a full-size vehicle. It works more as a class label than a measurement.
A 1/10 monster truck is far bigger than a 1/10 touring car, so compare length and weight for real size.
This one is 390 mm long.
Part number
The maker's product number for this exact version.
A V2, a new color, or a kit instead of an RTR usually has a different number, and parts can differ between them.
Check it against your box or receipt before ordering parts.

Drivetrain
Pinion
The small gear on the motor shaft. Fewer teeth gear the car shorter: quicker acceleration, lower top speed and a cooler motor. More teeth do the opposite.
On this car one tooth changes the gearing by about 7.7%.
Racers change the pinion to suit the track and the class's motor rules, and often compare setups by rollout rather than tooth count.
Spur
The large gear the pinion drives. A bigger spur with the same pinion gears the car shorter.
Pinion and spur must have the same pitch, or tooth size, to mesh.
Differentials
The type of each differential, as the maker states it.
A gear or ball diff lets the wheels on one axle turn at different speeds in a corner; a spool or locked diff turns them together for straight-line drive and climbing, at the cost of steering.
Pinion range
The pinion sizes the maker lists for the stock setup.
Going larger than the maker's limit gears the car taller than the motor and ESC are meant to run, which risks overheating them.
The Target pinion calculator shows what each size does to speed.
Axle drive, front
Whether the front axle is driven by the motor.
The calculator uses this axle's own tire size and complete recorded gear path.
Axle drive, rear
Whether the rear axle is driven by the motor.
The calculator uses this axle's own tire size and complete recorded gear path.
Transmission & axle, front
Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears.
It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur.
Transmission & axle, rear
Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears.
It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur.
Final drive
How many times the motor turns for one turn of the wheels. A higher number is shorter gearing: more acceleration and pulling power, less top speed.
Among 1/10 buggies in the catalog, the middle half run between 8.2:1 and 10.0:1 on stock gearing; this one is 10.0:1.
Axle coupling
How the driven axles are connected.
The coupling has not been established from a source. It is not inferred from 4WD or from the axle differentials.
The outside diameter of the mounted tire, tread to tread. A taller tire covers more ground each turn, which gears the car taller.
Race tires wear down over a day, and a smaller tire gears the car shorter.
Tire width, front
The outside width of the stock tire on the front axle.
Width and outside diameter are separate measurements; neither is the wheel's bead diameter.
Tire width, rear
The outside width of the stock tire on the rear axle.
Width and outside diameter are separate measurements; neither is the wheel's bead diameter.
Stock tire width
Stock tire width: A documented stock wheel, tire, or axle measurement. Stock dimensions alone do not establish the largest size that will clear the body and suspension.
Rollout, front
Distance at the front axle per motor turn through its recorded gear path.
This follows the listed gear reduction and tire diameter; it does not account for tire slip or deflection.
Rollout, rear
Distance at the rear axle per motor turn through its recorded gear path.
This follows the listed gear reduction and tire diameter; it does not account for tire slip or deflection.

Chassis
What the main chassis is made of and how it is built, as stated for this car. Braces, stiffeners and skid plates are not counted.
Composite is the makers' word for molded plastic, usually nylon with glass or other fibers: it flexes and shrugs off hits, and it is light and cheap to replace.
The rollout difference needs both tire diameters and axle reductions. The connection between axle inputs is not recorded, so its ability to accommodate a mismatch is unknown. These figures do not predict vehicle road speed.
Stock is as the vehicle ships.
Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Upgrades and setup
The Super Hotshot 2012 already includes full bearings, CVA oil dampers and a GT-Tuned motor. Retain those parts for the first build and inspect what the car actually needs before ordering a generic upgrade package. In the reviewed owner discussion, keeping the CVA dampers is advice alongside more extensive modification plans; the discussion does not establish that aluminum shocks are required.[1] Tamiya 58517 exact-edition instructions (opens in a new tab)[2] Super Hotshot setup and upgrade discussion (opens in a new tab)
Set the motor position from the exact manual. Each illustrated pinion uses a particular set-plate arrangement and pinion position. A larger pinion changes the motor load, so check the drivetrain's free movement and running temperature before going taller. Choose any motor and speed-controller replacement as a matched electrical package with space for the wiring inside the monocoque.[1] Tamiya 58517 exact-edition instructions (opens in a new tab)

Change the existing damper settings before replacing complete shocks. Confirm that the suspension and shafts move freely through their full travel, and keep the original wheel size as a baseline. Taller tires alter effective gearing and clearance as well as grip. The Reddit thread raises shaft-length and binding concerns across family members without resolving every exact part, so no universal-shaft shopping code is prescribed here.[1] Tamiya 58517 exact-edition instructions (opens in a new tab)[2] Super Hotshot setup and upgrade discussion (opens in a new tab)

Keep the motor-mount set plates and hardware matched to the chosen tooth count.
Spur tooth count and the complete reduction after it remain unknown.
