Background

The Hotshot II BLOCKHEAD MOTORS revisits Tamiya's 1987 four-wheel-drive buggy through Jun Watanabe's custom design. It uses a pre-painted brilliant-blue body and wing with white graphics, but the changes extend to the upper deck and roll cage. Raising the driver position alters the cockpit presentation, while side plates, body guards and a rear guard give this edition its own construction details. Underneath, it keeps the Hotshot II arrangement of shaft-driven four-wheel drive, enclosed front and rear differential gearboxes and double-wishbone suspension. A single front CVA oil damper works with a stabilizer, while two rear dampers operate separately. The yellow dampers, plated parts and low-profile tires contribute to the custom appearance without converting the chassis into a different suspension design. This edition arrived before the more original-looking black Hotshot II (2024). They share a family connection, but the BLOCKHEAD upper components and guards deserve their own parts references. It is particularly important to test-fit radio equipment and wiring around the supplied driver and cage before finishing the body. A part that fits beneath the standard upper parts may still need a separate clearance check in this custom package. Factory manual (opens in a new tab)

The included brushed motor and CVA dampers are a sensible baseline for a runner. Establish clean steering movement, correct damper action and the manual's motor-mount spacing before adding power. The appeal here includes the distinctive designer treatment and the older drivetrain layout, so an expensive conversion should address a specific use and preserve the features that attracted its builder. Keep the original custom pieces identified if changing wheels, guards or electronics later. Tamiya model information (opens in a new tab)
