Background

Top-Force was introduced in 1991 as Tamiya's hundredth radio-controlled model. It develops the earlier Manta Ray approach into a more adjustable shaft-driven four-wheel-drive buggy, using an FRP double-deck frame and front and rear ball differentials. Its low wedge-shaped body and undercowl place the mechanical design at the centre of the model's appeal. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The original 58100 instructions show a 21T pinion, front universal drive shafts and separate front and rear damper construction. Its setup section treats tires, toe angle, camber and damping as connected adjustments. That emphasis makes it a useful historical bridge between Tamiya's accessible molded-tub buggies and more elaborate race-oriented kits. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). A later reissue carries different kit numbers and can use different tires, so preserve this original's identity when assembling a restoration. The original manual lists metal bearings alongside optional ball-bearing equipment; it should not inherit the full-bearing claim of the later Evolution. Likewise, an FRP chassis is not the carbon chassis used by the Evolution. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

For a runner, begin with the factory geometry and the actual tires fitted. The manual advises small, balanced suspension adjustments, and excessive toe creates drag rather than a useful steering change. Inspect the ball differentials and drive joints before fitting more motor, keeping later replacement packages separate from the parts originally printed for this kit.
