Background
Thunder Shot (2022) revisits the 1987 shaft-driven buggy through an updated version of the 2005 reissue. Its pre-cut, pre-painted white and blue body keeps the futuristic original outline, with a separate rear wing and internal cover. The ABS bathtub, independent suspension and transverse front damper remain central to the design. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

Tamiya changed the CVA dampers and added an aluminum motor mount for this edition. The single front damper works with a stabilizer, while two rear dampers support the back of the car. Front and rear three-bevel gear differentials are enclosed in separate cases. These are specific construction details that distinguish the kit from both an original 58067 and the earlier 58361 reissue. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
The standard 15T pinion and manufacturer-stated 7.68:1 final drive give a gearing reference for the supplied Type 540 motor. Tamiya lists 83 mm tires on this edition. The older 2005 page lists a smaller nominal tire figure, so tire selection and the model year should stay together when comparing gearing or restoring a mixed-parts example. Build the standard suspension and steering before adding optional equipment. The instructions provide the motor alignment, damper filling and servo-neutral checks that a finished runner needs. Its appeal is the combination of familiar 1980s styling and a later electrical installation, with the exact 58706 manual governing the parts used underneath. How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Thunder Shot 58706 already includes the aluminum motor mount and revised CVA damper arrangement. Start with those parts, a correctly centered steering servo and the kit's 15T pinion. The factory ratio is 7.68:1; its 83 mm tires belong with this edition when comparing a different setup.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)
Follow the motor plate and mount arrangement in the 2022 instructions. The manual calls for adjustment of the mounting screws until the gears rotate smoothly. A later motor change still needs a compatible controller and battery system; the Type 540 label alone does not establish a brushless power limit.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)

Keep the transverse front damper and its stabilizer working freely together. Use the specified #400 manufacturer-grade oil as the build reference and check the seals and piston movement before changing spring preload. The single front shock does not justify replacing the whole suspension before a baseline run.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)
The parts list gives a 47 mm piston rod, which identifies a service component rather than an eye-to-eye shock length. Check the original component position before ordering replacements, and distinguish the 2022 rear wing, chassis cover and mount numbers from the earlier Thunder Shot kits.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)
