Background

The 2005 Thunder Shot brought back the four-wheel-drive buggy first introduced in 1987. It retains the futuristic body, bathtub chassis and three-damper layout. The front uses a transverse oil damper with a stabilizer, while the rear has two CVA dampers. Tamiya positioned it as an accessible off-road kit with straightforward assembly and servicing. Its compact front and rear gearboxes contain gear differentials, and the centrally mounted motor transmits drive through a shaft. Those construction choices make it useful to inspect as a complete system when restoring a used example. The factory page for this edition lists 73 mm tires, while the 2022 edition lists 83 mm; that difference should be retained rather than using the current tire figure for every Thunder Shot. The 2022 successor also changes the CVA damper specification and adds an aluminum motor mount. For this 58361 kit, use its own manual for motor position, damper assembly and radio installation. The body and family name establish lineage, but the exact kit number remains the safer starting point for service parts and gearing. Factory model information (opens in a new tab).
