Traxxas Nitro Rustler

Specs

Traxxas's Nitro Rustler is a rear-wheel-drive 1/10 stadium truck powered by a nitro engine and sold ready to race.

Its 20T clutch bell and 70T spur feed a 2.81:1 transmission for a 9.84:1 final drive, and Traxxas quotes 50 mph. It weighs 2 kg and uses 12 mm hexes. With nitro power the engine tune sets how much of that gearing you can use, so dial in the carburetor before you change the 32P clutch bell.

Engine powered, so there is no motor KV: compare gearing by rollout.

How to read these figures
  • Stock is as the vehicle ships.
  • Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
  • Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit, or does not have one, like a KV rating on a brushed motor.
  • Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

About teeth, pitch and bore
  • Tooth counts are the ones in the specifications above.
  • Pitch is given as metric module (Mod 1, Mod 0.8) or diametral pitch (32P, 48P). They are different standards and are not interchangeable, even where the numbers look close.
  • Bore is the pinion’s hole, listed separately from the motor shaft.

How these numbers were settled

Nitro, powered by a TRX 2.5 engine, so there is no KV rating or cell count and the electric no-load speed cannot be worked out.

  • The parts list sets the 20T clutch bell (4120) and the 70T spur (4470) in regular type as supplied.
  • The product page prints 'Gear Ratio (Internal): 2.81', the ratio after the spur in the Nitro Magnum 281 transmission, so the final drive is 70 divided by 20 times 2.81, or 9.84:1.
  • The owner's manual prints no gear chart, so the final drive is worked out rather than read from a chart.
  • Traxxas does not size the tires: the parts list names Alias 2.8 in tires on Jato Twin-Spoke wheels, and 2.8 in is the wheel size, so the tire diameter is left blank.
  • The 50+ mph figure is Traxxas's own claim for the truck and does not name the gearing.
