Specs

Traxxas's Ford Raptor R 4X4 VXL is a 1/10 four-wheel-drive short course truck, sold ready to run with a Velineon 3500 brushless motor and a VXL-3s speed control.

A 13T pinion drives a 54T spur, and 2.85:1 in the transmission gives an 11.82:1 final drive. The box also holds an 18T pinion for 8.54:1, which is what Traxxas's 60 mph claim assumes. It runs up to a 3S pack through a Traxxas High-Current plug, weighs 2.74 kg and rolls on 114.3 mm tires. The front shocks hold 50 wt oil and the rear 40 wt. Use the 18T pinion on smooth, hard surfaces only, and keep the 13T for grass and dirt.

How to read these figures
  • Stock is as the vehicle ships.
  • Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
  • The top speed is kinematic: an ideal no-load RPM with no slip and no loss under load, so a real car is slower.
  • Speed pinion is the taller gearing that ships in the box but is not fitted. It is stock, and the top speed leads with it; swapping it in is the owner’s job, and the car runs hotter on it.
  • The maker advertises 60 mph, which is their own claim on their own conditions.

About teeth, pitch and bore
  • Tooth counts are the ones in the specifications above.
  • Pitch is given as metric module (Mod 1, Mod 0.8) or diametral pitch (32P, 48P). They are different standards and are not interchangeable, even where the numbers look close.
  • Bore is the pinion’s hole, listed separately from the motor shaft (3 mm on the stock motor).
  • Gearing in the box is supplied, not fitted: the fitted set is what the figures and the calculators use.

How these numbers were settled

The owner's manual gear chart (p. 26) outlines a 13T pinion on the 54T spur, 11.82:1, as the out-of-box setup, and the manual (p. 7 and p. 20) lists a supplied optional pinion for top-speed running, which the chart places at 18T on the same spur, 8.54:1.

  • The formula above the chart multiplies the spur-to-pinion ratio by 2.85.
  • The parts list names the 54T spur (3956) but lists no pinion, so no pinion part is shown.
  • The 3956 spur is labelled 0.8 metric pitch, compatible with 32-pitch.
  • Traxxas quotes 60+ mph with optional gearing and a 3S LiPo, so the 60 mph figure assumes the 18T pinion.
  • The VXL-3s ESC is rated for 4.8 to 11.1 V, which is 2S to 3S LiPo (p. 18).
  • The tire is the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 (10181), which the parts list sizes at dual profile 4.5x1.7 in, so 114.3 mm.
  • The front shocks are filled with 50W oil and the rear with 40W (p. 24).
  • The page prints a battery compartment of 23 mm or 26 mm high, so the tray height is left blank.
  • It differs from the Ford Raptor R 4X4 Ultimate (101177-4), which ships with a 20T pinion and 7.68:1 gearing.
