Background
The RC500 took Associated’s nitro on-road racing line into a more elaborate suspension design. The factory manual credits the basic design to Phil Booth and Dave Preston and describes Associated’s subsequent development, including coil-over suspension. Its assembly instructions cover a chain-driven ball differential, rear driveshafts and separately built front and rear suspension. The historical catalog distinguishes the 5001 two-wheel-drive kit from the 5002 four-wheel-drive car. Both were supplied for the builder’s own engine, radio and body, and the catalog warns that side-exhaust engines do not fit. For a restoration, match the front end and drivetrain to the actual configuration before buying parts; the documented four-wheel-drive conversion is a separate assembly. How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Identify the two-wheel-drive front end and rear drivetrain before applying an RC500 parts list. The factory’s four-wheel-drive conversion adds separate front-drive, engine-pod and belt components, so the conversion instructions should accompany any car carrying those parts. Match the rear shock and brake revision to the applicable original supplement before choosing replacements.[1] RC500 2WD Suspension Racing Car Kit factory assembly material (opens in a new tab)[2] RC500 2WD Suspension Racing Car Kit factory assembly material (opens in a new tab)[3] RC500 2WD Suspension Racing Car Kit factory assembly material (opens in a new tab)

About these specs
Original configuration; identify the fitted tires, gearing and electronics on a restored car. Period battery-cell references do not establish a modern LiPo rating.
