Background

The 2012 Bruiser recreates Tamiya's detailed Toyota Hilux RN36 pickup around a metal ladder frame, leaf springs and a three-speed transmission. It preserves the appeal of a truck assembled from recognizable chassis and axle components, while the 540-type motor and revised gearbox distinguish this kit from the original 750-powered Bruiser. The tall tires, sleeper-style body and plated trim make the mechanical assembly and the finished appearance equally important. Model and equipment (opens in a new tab).

The three gears give the driver distinct ways to use the truck. First gear drives all four wheels at 54.63:1, second uses rear-wheel drive at 40.49:1 and third uses rear-wheel drive at 27.92:1. This is a working selectable transmission, so the shift servo, linkage adjustment and transmitter travel need to agree. The supplied motor remains the baseline when establishing that setup. Published ratios (opens in a new tab).

Under the body are die-cast axle housings, six-pinion gear differentials and oil dampers working beside the leaf springs. The suspension is intended to reproduce a full-size pickup's layout, rather than the independent suspension of a stadium truck. A separate speed controller, radio equipment, running battery and charger are required, so the electronics package needs to be selected as a system. Kit equipment (opens in a new tab).

For a driving build, keep the transmission and shafts turning freely before adding cosmetic or power changes. Tamiya offers a slipper-clutch set for this modern chassis and requires it when using the optional four-piece wheels, which grip the tire bead more firmly. That is a specific supporting-part requirement, not a reason to assume every wheel advertised for an older Bruiser fits this edition. Factory setup instructions (opens in a new tab).
