Background
The original Bruiser brought a detailed Toyota pickup body together with a metal ladder frame, leaf-sprung live axles and a remotely shifted three-speed transmission. Its 1985 kit belongs to Tamiya's early scale-truck lineage, with a large 750-type motor and mechanical speed control that distinguish it from the later 540-powered recreation. The sleeper-style rear body section and plated trim are as much a part of its character as the working drivetrain. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).

Building and maintaining it involves mechanisms that are unusual on simpler electric trucks. Low gear drives both axles, while the two higher ranges drive the rear wheels. A separate servo moves the shift linkage, and the instructions provide a manual-shift arrangement for a two-channel installation. That combination makes smooth gear engagement and free linkage movement more useful starting points than a faster motor. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The original wheel hubs, axle housings and transmission should be identified before buying restoration parts. Tamiya's modern Bruiser reproduces the same broad layout, but its revised transmission, motor and axle internals have their own instructions. Similar bodywork does not make a modern wheel, gear or bearing pack an automatic replacement for this kit. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
For a runner, start with the condition of the assembled mechanisms and the historical electrical system. The manual calls for checking gear rotation, lubricating moving parts and keeping dirt away from the speed-control contacts. A complete original truck can also be kept as a period build without treating modern electronics or cosmetic alterations as mandatory. Original assembly and maintenance guidance (opens in a new tab). How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Single report uses one outside source. It is useful as a starting figure, with the source and calculation described in the note.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Start with the original 58048 gearbox and shift linkage before adding power. Check that the transmission turns freely, then follow the manual's shift-position drawings with the wheels clear of the ground. Return the throttle to neutral before changing gear. A shift servo that keeps pushing after engagement needs its travel and linkage corrected rather than more torque.[1] Exact Tamiya 58048 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
The original suspension uses oil dampers beside the leaf springs. Reassemble the pistons, seals and spring covers in their shown order, fill and bleed the damper as instructed, and make sure the axle links move freely. The front wheel hubs are different left to right, so check their illustrated orientation before fitting the wheels.[1] Exact Tamiya 58048 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)

For a period restoration, retain serviceable original parts and identify the 750-type motor, resistor and mechanical controller. An electronic-controller conversion is a separate electrical project. Its controller, battery and receiver requirements must be established from that replacement system's own instructions; a nominal 7.2V battery reference in the old manual is not a LiPo rating.[1] Exact Tamiya 58048 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
