Background
The Mountain Rider brings back the open-bed Toyota pickup appearance associated with the Mountaineer, using the modern Bruiser-style three-speed chassis. The 84386 kit combines an injection-molded body, metal frame and leaf springs with an assembled model's working gear changes. It is a recreation for builders who want to see the truck's mechanisms as well as drive the finished pickup. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).

First gear drives all four wheels, while the two higher gears drive the rear wheels. The kit's full ball bearings and 540-type motor belong to the revised running gear, so an original Mountaineer is not the mechanical reference for ordering transmission and axle parts. The truck still needs radio equipment, a speed controller and a running battery chosen to suit the installation. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The open rear bed and roll bar give this version a different finishing project from the sleeper-bodied Bruiser. Body and interior work can take as much planning as the chassis: lighting wires, receiver, controller and shift linkage share limited space. Keep those mechanisms accessible when adding an interior or light-control equipment. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
A documented Mountain Rider build used a Crawler-Tuned motor and a slipper clutch, while leaving an optional driver and wheel set unfitted. The later update describes completed interior work and an LED installation that needed careful packaging and an altered electronics-box lid. It shows a detailed scale-build direction, rather than establishing that every listed option is a drop-in fit or an improvement every truck needs. Completed build and later follow-up (opens in a new tab).

How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Single report uses one outside source. It is useful as a starting figure, with the source and calculation described in the note.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Build around the exact 84386 Mountain Rider manual. The revised transmission has three positions: first gear drives both axles, and the higher gears drive the rear wheels. Check shift-linkage movement and transmitter travel with the truck supported before fitting the finished body. A two-channel radio uses the illustrated fixed-gear arrangement.[1] Exact Tamiya 84386 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
Use the 19T motor pinion and the pictured mounting sequence as the starting point. The oil dampers, leaf springs, axle locators and propeller joints work together, so check for binding through the suspension's movement before adding weight or changing the motor. The instructions also show the optional differential-lock arrangement and its assembly order.[1] Exact Tamiya 84386 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)

Keep access to the electronics box and shift mechanism when detailing the open-bed body. Interior and lighting changes need space for wiring and body removal. The original 58111 Mountaineer's 750 motor and transmission parts are a different restoration reference, even though the finished trucks have a similar appearance.[1] Exact Tamiya 84386 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
