Background

The Hornet followed the Grasshopper in 1984 with a larger motor and a more sporting equipment package. It kept the accessible rear-drive bathtub layout, but used a lightweight polycarbonate body, spiked rear tires and oil-filled rear dampers. These were meaningful changes for someone moving beyond a first small-motor buggy, while the simple front swing axles and rolling rigid rear axle kept the family resemblance clear. Its design is a useful snapshot of the period between very simple beginners' kits and purpose-built racing buggies. The front wheels move independently, but the gearbox and rear axle move together. The rear dampers therefore work with a different mechanism from a modern buggy's separate rear arms. Rebuilding that layout accurately preserves the Hornet's character; buying four conventional shocks does not turn it into an independently suspended car. Factory manual (opens in a new tab)

Original examples used a mechanical speed controller and resistor, and the surviving instruction edition illustrates that equipment. A car that now has an electronic controller has already moved away from its original electrical arrangement, even if its body and chassis remain familiar. That can be entirely practical for a runner, but it changes which battery and motor limits apply. Check those installed components before treating a restored car as a standard new kit. The Hornet later returned as a rerelease and eventually inspired the substantially redesigned Hornet Evo. These versions share a name and recognizable body shape without sharing every suspension or gearbox detail. For an original restoration, preserve the distinction between replacing a worn component and building a later configuration. Bearings, clean pivots and correctly rebuilt rear dampers are useful running-car priorities before pursuing more motor speed. Factory manual (opens in a new tab)
