Background

The Grasshopper remake preserves the idea that made the 1984 buggy approachable: a simple rear-drive kit with a small 380 motor, a molded bathtub and a hard plastic body. It is intended to be built and driven without immediately replacing half the car. Its independent front swing axles and rigid rear axle retain the original style of construction, and the three-piece wheels carry ribbed front tires and paddled rears. This is the restrained member of the Grasshopper and Hornet family. The Hornet supplied a larger motor and rear oil dampers, while the Grasshopper retains friction dampers and a lower-power starting point. The hard body contributes to its character and uses a different finishing approach from the flexible polycarbonate shells of many racing buggies. It is worth deciding whether the car is for occasional scale-style running, relaxed dirt driving or a more involved modification project before buying upgrades. Tamiya explicitly supports a 540-motor conversion, but the instruction drawing treats it as a complete installation using the appropriate pinion and mounting arrangement. The supplied 380 motor and its pinion remain a valid baseline. Bearings are also an identified option. These are separate choices: reducing bearing friction does not require a faster motor, and a faster motor does not add oil damping or change the rigid rear suspension. A current kit is easier to approach as a runner than an unknown original restoration, although regional electronics packages can differ. Choose the radio, servo, speed controller and battery from the actual box contents and instructions. The Grasshopper's value is in its clear, simple design. Keep the stock layout while learning it, then make changes in response to the surface and behavior you want to alter. Tamiya model information (opens in a new tab)
