Background

The Grasshopper introduced a much simpler route into Tamiya off-road kits in 1984. A molded bathtub chassis, screw-mounted hard body and rear-mounted 380 motor kept the construction approachable. Its suspension used independently moving swing axles at the front and a rigid rear gearbox and axle assembly. The layout could be understood as it was built, without the separate drive shafts and trailing-arm rear suspension found on the Frog. Factory manual (opens in a new tab)

That simplicity is also central to the way the original car should be approached today. Coil springs supported the suspension without the controlled oil damping of the more expensive designs. Narrow ribbed front tires and rear paddles suited the single-seat desert-buggy appearance. It was a small-motor starter kit that could later accept selected motor, bearing and suspension changes, with each change affecting a different part of the driving experience. Tamiya's original instructions show a period 540-motor conversion with a separate pinion and revised speed-control hardware. The complete installation matters: a larger motor is not a reason to reuse every part of the 380 arrangement unchanged. For a restored example, identify the motor, control unit and battery arrangement that are fitted now. Many survivors have been rebuilt over several decades, so their present equipment may represent more than one stage of the car's life. Factory manual (opens in a new tab)

A later Grasshopper remake returned to the same broad concept, while Grasshopper II and the comical models developed it in different directions. Keep original 58043 identity separate from those later kits. Owner discussions still include drivers who prefer the modest stock motor and easy handling; there is no requirement to turn a Grasshopper into a faster buggy to make it useful. For a first drive after restoration, smooth suspension movement, sound gearbox mounts and secure battery retention are the sensible starting points. Model history (opens in a new tab)
