Background

The Frog (2005) brings back the 1983 buggy's open space frame and slim pink-and-white body, with changes intended to make the old design more practical to assemble and run. It remains a rear-drive assembly kit with independent front suspension and trailing-arm rear suspension. The low battery position and horizontal rear oil dampers preserve the original layout, so its appeal is as much the unusual construction as the finished shape. The remake revised several working components. The rear drive system uses dogbone-style joints, and the rear dampers use diaphragm construction. Tamiya retained the three-piece wheels and the contrast between narrow ribbed front tires and much wider spiked rears. Those details give the Frog its period proportions while making wheels, shaft joints and damper service specific subjects to check when mixing restoration parts. The gearbox offers three matched gear combinations. The standard build balances the available choices; the taller combination changes both the spur and pinion, while the shorter combination suits a different load. Changing one gear independently is not the intended adjustment. The included brushed motor gives a useful starting point for learning the car, and sorting free rotation, steering and rear damper operation is more useful than choosing a faster motor before its first run. Factory manual (opens in a new tab)

The Frog sits between Tamiya's very simple bathtub buggies and its more elaborate four-wheel-drive rereleases in build complexity. It offers a visibly mechanical kit experience without the Hotshot family's second gearbox and center shaft. Its current parts and manual are useful for maintaining this edition, but do not make its altered drive joints or damper components automatic replacements for every original Frog. Match the kit number as well as the name when buying service parts. Tamiya model information (opens in a new tab)
