Background
VQS (2020) is Tamiya's revised reissue of the Vanquish, the mid-range four-wheel-drive buggy introduced in 1988 with mechanisms inherited from the Avante. It keeps the forward cockpit and large rear wing, both painted black and prepared with cuts and mounting holes. An ABS monocoque frame replaces the Avante's more elaborate chassis construction while preserving an adjustable, race-influenced suspension layout. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The transmission uses small planetary differentials at the front and rear and a ball differential in the center. Inspection hatches give access to the axle gearboxes. This reissue supplies universal drive shafts at both ends, aluminum front uprights and front and rear stabilizers. Threaded upper suspension arms adjust camber, while CVA oil dampers control the double-wishbone suspension. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
Narrow front and wider rear tires both measure 88 mm in diameter. The included 21T pinion gives a published 8.73:1 final drive, with a Type 540 motor supplied and the controller sold separately. The underside battery access accepts the Tamiya packs specified in the instructions. For a rebuild, distinguish VQS reissue parts from the original Vanquish rather than assuming an unchanged assembly from the shared styling. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Set the center ball differential independently of the front and rear planetary differentials. These are different mechanisms with different assembly requirements. Check the inspection covers, drive shafts and suspension pivots for free movement before changing motor power.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
Use the supplied 21T pinion and 8.73:1 final drive as the reference setup. The universal shafts and aluminum front uprights are already part of this edition, so inspect them before buying an upgrade that duplicates the supplied equipment. Establish the manual's camber and stabilizer settings, then make individual changes for the surface.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
