Background
The Mountaineer continued Tamiya's original three-speed Toyota pickup family with an open bed and a plated roll bar in place of the Bruiser's rear sleeper section. Its original 58111 instructions identify the period 750-powered transmission, leaf springs, metal ladder frame and mechanical speed-control system. The visual change makes it a distinct Toyota truck rather than a different name for the later Mountain Rider. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).

The transmission is central to the driving experience. Its three positions select four-wheel-drive low range followed by two rear-wheel-drive ranges. A four-channel radio is recommended to operate speed control, steering and shifting independently, while a two-channel installation uses manual gear selection. Setting the shift rod and its travel correctly matters more than forcing the servo against a reluctant gear change. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The suspension combines metal leaf springs with separate dampers, and the wheels attach to the model's own hubs. These details put the Mountaineer closer to a mechanical scale model than to a modern competition crawler. Its original frame and drivetrain parts should be checked by number when restoring a used example, especially where previous owners have mixed period and modern equipment. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The later Mountain Rider revisits the open-bed appearance with the modern Bruiser-based running gear. Keep that lineage in mind when shopping: the original 58111 service card includes its own transmission, axle, wheel and body parts. Preserve serviceable original assemblies for a period restoration, or define a separate runner conversion before replacing the electrical system. How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Single report uses one outside source. It is useful as a starting figure, with the source and calculation described in the note.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Begin with the original Mountaineer 58111 shift mechanism. Set the shift rail and servo movement to the three positions shown, and return the throttle to neutral before changing gear. The manual's two-channel alternative fixes a gear manually; it does not provide remote shifting without another channel.[1] Exact Tamiya 58111 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
Service the oil dampers and check the leaf springs, shackles and axle-locating parts before changing suspension hardware. Use the illustrated left and right front hubs in their proper positions, and tighten the wheels with the specified three-screw attachment. Those dedicated hubs need a more specific parts check than a generic wheel-hex measurement.[1] Exact Tamiya 58111 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)

Keep the original 750-powered transmission and mechanical controller distinct from the Mountain Rider rerelease. The service card provides exact original axle, shaft, spring and damper identifiers. Use those references to repair a period runner before deciding whether it needs an altered drivetrain or a different electrical system.[1] Exact Tamiya 58111 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
