Background
Thunder Dragon (2021) revives the angular manga-inspired buggy associated with Radio Control Boy. Its silver body is painted and cut out, with the canopy left clear. The assembly kit uses a mid-motor, shaft-driven four-wheel-drive chassis with an ABS bathtub frame and sealed front and rear gearboxes. Tamiya lists a September 2021 release for this numbered edition. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The suspension is an important distinction within the Dragon family. Thunder Dragon uses one horizontally mounted CVA damper at the front and two at the rear, with a front stabilizer. Its compact three-bevel differential units sit in the axle gearboxes, and an aluminum motor mount is included. All four spike tires measure 83 mm in diameter, with a published 7.68:1 final drive. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
A Type 540 motor is supplied; the electronic speed controller, radio equipment, battery and charger are separate purchases. The clear dust cover helps shield the equipment from debris. Treat the 2021 kit as its own parts reference when restoring an older Thunder Dragon, because a repeated model name does not establish that the body preparation or every mechanical component stayed unchanged. How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Start with the 15T pinion and the motor-mount arrangement in the 47458 instructions. Inspect the propeller shaft joints and gearbox alignment before adding power. The aluminum motor mount is already supplied, so check its condition before replacing it as part of a general hop-up list.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
Service the single horizontal front damper as the assembly shown for Thunder Dragon. The front stabilizer and monoshock work together; fitting settings copied from a four-damper Dragon changes the suspension arrangement. Keep the clear cover and servo protection properly located, then check that the steering moves freely through its full travel.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
