Background
Terra Scorcher (2020), called Scorcher in Japan, revisits Tamiya's 1988 four-wheel-drive buggy. Tamiya describes its chassis as an upgraded development of the Thunder Shot layout. It retains a light bathtub frame and shaft-driven transmission, with separate front and rear gearbox assemblies for maintenance. The compact body and large curved wing recreate the original off-road shape. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The suspension supplies four CVA oil dampers, front and rear stabilizers and threaded upper arms for camber adjustment. This reissue also includes an aluminum motor mount and universal drive shafts front and rear. Full ball bearings are standard, so a bearing kit is not a missing basic requirement. Each axle uses a three-bevel differential. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
The supplied 540 motor drives through a 15T pinion and the published 7.68:1 final ratio. All four spike tires measure 83 mm in diameter. The controller, radio equipment, battery and charger remain separate purchases. When comparing this edition with the original or another Thunder Shot derivative, check its supplied shafts, stabilizers and suspension adjustments before deciding what needs replacement. How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Inspect the supplied universal shafts, bearings and aluminum motor mount before planning upgrades. This reissue already includes them. Set the 15T pinion and motor mounting to the factory arrangement, then confirm that both axle gearboxes turn freely.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
Establish the manual's camber, toe and stabilizer arrangement before experimenting. Four CVA dampers and two stabilizers give more setup choices than the simpler front-monoshock derivatives. Keep the front and rear damper parts and stabilizer mountings with their own assembly drawings when servicing the car.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
