Tamiya's TD2 is a 1/10 rear-wheel-drive buggy chassis built from a kit, with a monocoque frame, a mid-mounted motor and a ball differential, sold as the Astute.

It pairs the 70T spur with a 2.60:1 gearbox and axle stage on a 284 mm wheelbase. Tamiya's chart for that spur runs from 7.28:1 on a 25T pinion to 11.38:1 on a 16T, so the pinion you fit sets the gearing. Pinion The small gear on the motor shaft. Fewer teeth gear the car shorter: quicker acceleration, lower top speed and a cooler motor. More teeth do the opposite. On a chassis sold as kits, each kit brings its own. Spur The large gear the pinion drives. A bigger spur with the same pinion gears the car shorter. Pinion and spur must have the same pitch, or tooth size, to mesh. Transmission & axle Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears. It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur. Final drive How many times the motor turns for one turn of the wheels. A higher number is shorter gearing: more acceleration and pulling power, less top speed. The range comes from the maker's gearing chart for the pinions it lists.

How these numbers were settled

Every TD2 kit shares the 70T spur and the gearbox and axle stage after it.

The Astute 2022 manual names the 70T spur gear (MA27, PDF p. 4) and prints the formula 'Spur gear teeth (70T) / Pinion gear teeth x 2.6', with a pinion chart for the kit 70T spur, 11.38:1 on a 16T pinion to 7.28:1 on a 25T, the kit 17T marked at 10.71:1 (PDF p. 25).
Tamiya's page prints the same 'Gear Ratio = 10.71:1'.
