Background
Super Storm Dragon turns a long-absent manga body into a complete running kit. Tamiya explains that the design appeared in Radio Control Boy and was sold as a spare shell in 1989, but not as a complete chassis-and-body kit. The 2020 release places it on a rear-wheel-drive Hornet chassis, reflecting the car's early manga appearance. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The chassis is deliberately simple: an ABS box frame, independent swing-axle front suspension and a rolling rigid rear gearbox with oil dampers. Three-piece wheels carry narrow grooved front tires and wider rear spikes. Their outside diameters differ, at 73 mm front and 86 mm rear; the driven rear size is the useful figure for calculating road speed. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
The white polycarbonate body is painted and cut out, with stickers and driver finishing left to the builder. A Type 540 motor and 18T pinion are supplied, giving an 8.2:1 final drive. The radio, electronic speed controller, battery and charger are separate. This rear-wheel-drive kit should not be confused with the shaft-driven four-wheel-drive Fire, Thunder or Saint Dragon editions. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). How to read these figures
- Only the driven axle supplies a motor-to-wheel calculation. Unpowered wheels have tire dimensions but no drive ratio.
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Keep the front and rear tire dimensions separate when calculating rollout. Only the 86 mm rear tires are driven, and the kit uses an 18T pinion. Check the motor mesh and sealed gearbox assembly before changing gearing or motor output.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
Inspect the rolling rear axle, its springs and the rear oil dampers before adding accessories. The simple swing-axle front end is a different arrangement from the double-wishbone four-wheel-drive Dragon kits. Use the 47438 instructions for the body and driver mountings, and retain free suspension movement when fitting the painted shell.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
