Background
Super Astute (2018) revisits Tamiya's 1991 rear-wheel-drive racing buggy. The reissue retains the original layout while revising details, including 0.5 Mod transmission gearing. Its 2.5 mm FRP main and sub-decks place the battery and radio equipment low in the chassis, with four-wheel double-wishbone suspension and CVA oil dampers. Although the model name says 2018, Tamiya lists January 2019 as its first release month. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The Tamiya Traction Control mechanism is an adjustable slipper clutch. A spring presses the spur between pressure plates; adjustment changes how it transmits shocks and limits wheelspin. Front rib-spike tires and wider square-spike rear tires give the buggy a distinctly race-oriented layout. The front tires measure 85 mm in diameter and the driven rear tires 82 mm. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
Electronics selection matters on this edition. The motor and controller are separate purchases, and the installation calls for low-profile radio equipment. Tamiya excludes its standard 540/540J, Sport-Tuned and Torque-Tuned motors from the listed motor choices. A complete ball-bearing conversion also requires additional bearings, so check the supplied bearing locations before ordering a generic set. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). How to read these figures
- Only the driven axle supplies a motor-to-wheel calculation. Unpowered wheels have tire dimensions but no drive ratio.
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Derived uses recorded dimensions or arithmetic. The row explains the inference. A nominal mating size is not a measured tolerance or a complete fitment guarantee.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Choose the motor, controller and low-profile servo as a complete installation before assembly. The published motor exclusions matter here: a familiar Tamiya brushed motor is not automatically suitable for this chassis. The 82T spur and kit 25T pinion use 0.5 Mod teeth; the manual prints an 8.49:1 final ratio for that combination.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
Set the TTC slipper from the manual's standard position and make small changes for grip. The setup section permits at most a quarter-turn adjustment from that position and warns against overtightening, which can transfer landing shocks into the gears. Inspect the slipper plates and spring before treating extra motor power as an upgrade.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)

For a full-bearing build, Tamiya identifies four 1150 and four 850 bearings as additional purchases. Keep the front and rear damper assemblies separate, and use the printed setup measurements rather than turning a piston-rod dimension into an assembled shock length.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
