Background

Novafox brings Tamiya's Fox design into a later assembly-kit format while keeping its slim body, gold wheels and three-damper suspension. Its rear-wheel-drive layout gives it a different character from the shaft-driven four-wheel-drive buggies released around the same period. The front wheels use narrow ribbed tires, with wider oval-block tires putting the power down at the rear. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The changes go beyond the name and stickers. Tamiya revised the rear drive shafts to dogbones, added a front stabilizer and fitted eight ball bearings in the gearbox and rear uprights. The enclosed ABS monocoque and transverse front damper remain part of the design. These revisions give an owner a clear reason to distinguish Novafox 58577 from an original Fox 58051 when choosing shafts, joints and steering components. This is a kit that rewards careful installation of the radio equipment. The manual requires a standard-size steering servo and gives a mounting sketch rather than a single universal servo envelope. Tamiya also excludes its rectangular LF3700 battery, so battery chemistry alone does not settle whether a pack fits. Establish the standard 15T setup before experimenting with the separately described gearing options. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

For a running build, keep the supplied oil dampers and inspect their assembly before replacing the suspension. The manual explains oil filling, front stabilizer clearance and motor-mount spacer positions. Those are useful starting adjustments on a design whose appearance is largely about its 1980s origins, while its drivetrain and radio installation belong to this later edition.
