Background
The original Manta Ray arrived in 1990 as a shaft-driven four-wheel-drive buggy. Its broad polycarbonate body takes its shape from the marine animal, while the large rear wing and dish wheels give it a different look from the angular buggies that preceded it. The 58087 manual identifies the original kit and its period electrical equipment. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The chassis uses a molded tub reinforced with a honeycomb pattern, independent double-wishbone suspension and four oil dampers. Front and rear gearboxes can be opened for servicing without treating the entire chassis as a sealed assembly. A 21T pinion appears in the original instructions and parts drawings, with different motor-mount holes used for other gear ratios. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
Manta Ray also provides context for the more elaborate Top-Force family that followed. The later car uses a double-deck frame and ball differentials rather than this tub and gear-differential arrangement. Those family connections are useful for understanding the range, but they do not make every shared-looking component interchangeable. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
For a running restoration, inspect the propeller shaft, joints and bearings before increasing motor output. The original manual's option section specifically links a race-oriented motor to additional drivetrain equipment. Keep those conditions beside the upgrade choice, and use the original diagrams to distinguish printed factory numbers from later handwritten annotations on an archived copy. How to read these figures
- The rollout difference needs both tire diameters and axle reductions. The connection between axle inputs is not recorded, so its ability to accommodate a mismatch is unknown. These figures do not predict vehicle road speed.
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Single report uses one outside source. It is useful as a starting figure, with the source and calculation described in the note.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Inspect the original Manta Ray's propeller shaft, gearbox joints and bearings before increasing motor power. Its manual specifically calls for ball bearings, ball differentials and universal shafts when installing a race-oriented motor. Those conditions are more useful than assuming that any 540-size motor is suitable without further changes.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)
The original motor installation shows a 21T pinion and numbered mounting holes. Select the holes for the actual tooth count and confirm free gear rotation after tightening. Keep the original manual and its printed codes beside the car; handwritten replacement numbers on a scanned copy are not factory specifications.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)

Start the four oil dampers at the documented assembly positions. Refill and inspect them before replacing complete units, and check that the arms move freely without the shocks. A different oil or spring is a setup choice for the surface, not a substitute for a binding pivot.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)
A later ball-differential or universal-shaft option needs the complete documented installation. A shared DF-01 family name does not establish that one part completes a conversion. For period electrical equipment, preserve the controller and linkage references separately from the instructions for any electronic replacement.[1] Exact numbered factory assembly manual (opens in a new tab)[2] Factory design history and exact reissue context (opens in a new tab)
