Background

The Bigwig was Tamiya's 1986 celebration of ten years of radio-controlled models. Takuya Yura of Mooncraft designed its broad aerodynamic body, giving the project a direct connection to full-size race-car design. Tamiya's original manual describes collaboration between the body designer and chassis engineers rather than treating the shell as a separate decoration. Under that body is a shaft-driven four-wheel-drive chassis with independent suspension and oil dampers. The unusual rack-and-pinion steering is one of its defining mechanical details. This original kit uses a Technigold motor and period mechanical speed-control equipment; the GT-Tuned motor and electronic-controller installation of the 2017 reissue should not be read back into it. The factory instructions provide 13T and 15T motor installations with different set-plate positions, plus positions for additional pinions. A restoration needs those spacers and plates as much as the correct tooth count. The original parts drawings also retain their older printed component codes. Confirm the edition and the assembly drawing before treating a later package number as a direct replacement. Factory model information (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The design's historical interest is its combination of scale-inspired aerodynamics and distinctive chassis engineering. For a preserved example, inspect the rack boots, drive joints and old electrical equipment before adding power. The original manual remains the reference for period equipment, while a modern electronic conversion needs its own controller, battery and wiring checks.
