Background
Super Sabre (2023) is an updated reissue of Tamiya's 1987 entry-level four-wheel-drive buggy. Its narrow wedge body keeps the original sabre-inspired shape and arrives painted silver and cut out. The Japanese release date is January 2024, despite the 2023 edition name. Under the body is an ABS bathtub frame with a mid-mounted motor and shaft-driven transmission. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

The chassis separates into the central tub and front and rear gearboxes, making the major assemblies accessible for servicing. Sealed gear cases contain three-bevel differentials. Double-wishbone suspension uses a single front CVA oil damper, two rear dampers and a front stabilizer. Narrow front and wider rear hybrid tires both have an 88 mm outside diameter. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).
The kit provides 13T and 15T pinions, giving different final-drive choices rather than one universal installed ratio. The Type 540 motor is included, but the controller, radio, battery and charger are separate. That combination makes this an assembly project with a vintage suspension layout, rather than an off-the-shelf race-ready package. Keep the actual pinion fitted with the setup when comparing speed or ordering gearing parts. Factory reference (opens in a new tab). Assembly manual (opens in a new tab).

How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Identify which supplied pinion is fitted before changing the gearing. The manual lists 13T at 10.043:1 and 15T at 8.704:1, and shows different set-plate positions for each. It also lists separately sold 16T and 17T alternatives. Fit the matching motor-plate arrangement and confirm free rotation rather than reusing the previous mounting position.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
Retain the front monoshock and stabilizer setup as the starting point. Its layout differs from a buggy with two independent front dampers. Check the servo dust cover, chassis cover and sealed gearbox joints after dirt running, then inspect the plastic and metal bearing locations before choosing a bearing conversion.[1] Exact factory product and historical description (opens in a new tab)[2] Exact factory assembly and setup manual (opens in a new tab)
