Background
The King Cab takes a different direction from Tamiya's tall hard-body monster trucks. Its Nissan pickup body sits over a rear-wheel-drive off-road racer with independent double-wishbone suspension, oil dampers and a ball differential. The 1989 kit uses large spiked tires and a polycarbonate body, giving it a stadium-truck character rather than the axle-mounted motors and rigid suspension of a Clod Buster. Its setup pages explain the relationship between the tires, camber, springs, stabilizers and gearing. The stock 18T pinion is the reference for the supplied 540-type motor, with smaller pinions listed for hotter period motors and demanding surfaces. That makes gearing a response to load and track conditions, rather than simply a way to increase theoretical speed. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The ball differential is an important restoration item. It uses its own pressure discs, thrust bearing and shims, and should be inspected as an assembly before fitting a more demanding motor or larger tires. Keep the dedicated ball-differential grease distinct from ordinary gear grease and make sure the rebuilt drive operates correctly before loading it on the ground. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
Its period setup advice is specific about when to change the standard gearing and how to use the optional suspension settings. The optional Hi-Cap damper instructions describe a different assembly from the supplied CVA shocks, so their dimensions should not be treated as the factory shock length. Keeping those configurations separate makes the manual useful for both a faithful restoration and a running rebuild. Period setup and parts manual (opens in a new tab).

How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Derived uses recorded dimensions or arithmetic. The row explains the inference. A nominal mating size is not a measured tolerance or a complete fitment guarantee.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Establish a smooth original ball differential before adding motor load. The 58081 instructions show separate pressure discs, a thrust bearing, disk springs and optional thin differential spacers, together with dedicated ball-differential grease. Check the condition of those parts and the adjustment instead of treating ordinary gearbox grease as a substitute.[1] Exact Tamiya 58081 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
Keep the stock 18T pinion and 77T spur as the reference setup. The factory table gives 10.87:1 overall reduction for that pinion and smaller-pinion examples for demanding conditions. Larger tires or more difficult surfaces change the load, so choose gearing around the actual running conditions and check the drive for slip rather than aiming only for higher speed.[1] Exact Tamiya 58081 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)

The supplied CVA dampers are already oil-filled units. Rebuild them with the proper piston and seal sequence, then adjust the spring retainers in equal front and rear pairs. The 92mm damper length on the optional-parts page belongs to 53037 Hi-Cap dampers; it does not establish the stock damper length.[1] Exact Tamiya 58081 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
