Tamiya's DF-02 is a 1/10 four-wheel-drive, shaft-driven buggy chassis built from a kit, sold today as the Aero Avante.

It pairs a 70T spur with a 2.60:1 gearbox and axle stage on a 266 mm wheelbase. Tamiya's chart for that spur runs from 9.58:1 on a 19T pinion to 11.38:1 on a 16T, and the kit pinion sits at the tall end of it. The pinion, motor and tires come with each kit rather than with the chassis, so enter yours in the gearing tool.

Pinion The small gear on the motor shaft. Fewer teeth gear the car shorter: quicker acceleration, lower top speed and a cooler motor. More teeth do the opposite. On a chassis sold as kits, each kit brings its own. Spur The large gear the pinion drives. A bigger spur with the same pinion gears the car shorter. Pinion and spur must have the same pitch, or tooth size, to mesh. Transmission & axle Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears. It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur. This one is worked out from the tooth counts the maker publishes. Final drive How many times the motor turns for one turn of the wheels. A higher number is shorter gearing: more acceleration and pulling power, less top speed. The range comes from the maker's gearing chart for the pinions it lists.

Tire diameter The outside diameter of the mounted tire, tread to tread. A taller tire covers more ground each turn, which gears the car taller. Race tires wear down over a day, and a smaller tire gears the car shorter.

How these numbers were settled

The DF-02 manual (printed for the Gravel Hound) names the '70T Spur gear' in the rear gearbox (PDF p. 4) and prints a gear ratio chart for it: 16T 11.38, 17T 10.71, 18T 10.11 and the standard 19T 9.58 (PDF p. 7).

Tamiya prints the ratio for the complete drive rather than the stage after the spur, so it is derived: 9.58 x 19/70 = 2.600, and the same 2.6 gives every other cell of the chart.
The Aero Avante page prints 'ギヤ比 9.58' with 'シャフト駆動4WD DF-02' and a 266mm wheelbase.
