Background

TA02 continued Tamiya's shaft-driven touring-car development in the 1990s, appearing beneath race-car bodies such as the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI. It uses an enclosed front and rear transmission connected by a propeller shaft, with independent suspension and oil dampers. The Alfa 58128 and Racing Special 58157 instructions provide two exact configurations within the family. Alfa factory instructions (opens in a new tab). The Alfa's front gear differential and rear ball differential need different assembly and lubrication procedures. Its setup also reflects the tires, body and hardware selected for that specific kit. Later short-wheelbase, wide-track and truck derivatives should be identified separately instead of treating every TA02 name as one interchangeable car. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).

Restoring a used chassis is often a matter of understanding what is already fitted. One detailed TA02 rebuild retained apparently unworn differential components after cleaning, replaced a broken motor-mount part and compared replacement dampers with the originals. Its square LiPo pack did not fit the old battery compartment, illustrating why nominal scale and voltage do not establish physical pack clearance. Tamiya has also offered later TA02 conversion parts, including a carbon chassis set. Those options create choices for a running rebuild, but the particular kit, supporting parts and intended geometry still matter. Start with smooth gearbox operation, correctly assembled dampers and a free steering mechanism; a restored original plastic chassis remains a valid way to enjoy the period car.
