Tamiya's M-06 is a 1/10 rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive chassis for small classic cars, sold under bodies such as the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and the Lotus Europa Special.

The kits include a 20T pinion for 5.8:1, and Tamiya's table adds 6.44:1 on an 18T and 7.25:1 on a 16T. The rear section mounts in three places for a 210 mm, 225 mm or 239 mm wheelbase. Tamiya does not publish the spur tooth count or the stage after it, so those printed totals are the gearing to work from in the gearing tool.

Pinion The small gear on the motor shaft. Fewer teeth gear the car shorter: quicker acceleration, lower top speed and a cooler motor. More teeth do the opposite. On a chassis sold as kits, each kit brings its own. Spur The large gear the pinion drives. A bigger spur with the same pinion gears the car shorter. Pinion and spur must have the same pitch, or tooth size, to mesh. Transmission & axle Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears. It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur. Final drive, printed How many times the motor turns for one turn of the wheels. A higher number is shorter gearing: more acceleration and pulling power, less top speed. On-road racers often compare gearing by rollout instead, because tire sizes differ between cars.

How these numbers were settled

Tamiya prints 'ギヤレシオ=5.8:1（キット標準20Tピニオン使用時）' on the Alpine A110 Jagermeister 1973 58708, Lotus Europa Special 58698, Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 58677 and Eunos Roadster 47431, and the M-06 manual fits a 20T pinion (BA20) with the options 16T (7.25:1), 18T (6.44:1) and 20T (5.8:1) (step 7, PDF p. 6). 16 x 7.25 = 20 x 5.8 = 116, and 18 x 6.44 = 115.9.

The spur and counter gear are shown without tooth counts and the gearbox stage is not published, so pinion x ratio is the only gearing fact.
