Background
The WLtoys 284131 is a miniature four-wheel-drive short-course-style truck with a metal chassis and LED lighting. Its narrow tires and low body make it a smooth-surface model despite the off-road appearance. Model information (opens in a new tab).

A 130 brushed motor and 7.4V 400mAh battery provide the stock power package. The integrated electronics and small steering servo make exact replacement-part identification useful before an electronics change. Model information (opens in a new tab).
The stock transmission uses a 17-tooth motor pinion and 29-tooth spur. A second 19-tooth pinion and 27-tooth spur are supplied for taller gearing on suitable smooth surfaces. Gearing and driving review (opens in a new tab).

How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Single report uses one outside source. It is useful as a starting figure, with the source and calculation described in the note.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Upgrades and setup
Decide whether you want grip driving or drifting before modifying the 284131. Pavel Rojtberg's documented drift build starts by replacing the grippy tires with hard plastic tires and changing suspension preload, rather than adding power. Its aim is controlled sliding at lower speed. Those choices change the character of the car and are not a general improvement for fast grip driving.[1] Pavel Rojtberg 284131 drift conversion and follow-up (opens in a new tab)
The build then addresses steering travel and front differential movement. Its alternative servo-horn position needs a different ball stud, and its suggested replacement differential needs longer driveshafts. Those supporting changes matter: a differential or steering part mentioned in the article is not a standalone drop-in recommendation. Check the complete arrangement before buying components.[1] Pavel Rojtberg 284131 drift conversion and follow-up (opens in a new tab)

Read the later metal-differential result as well as the initial conversion. The author reports that an aftermarket metal gear damaged the plastic center-drive pinion. That is one observed failure, not a measured failure rate, but it is a reason to consider the mating gears together. Keep the original components until the new arrangement moves smoothly and meets your driving goal.[1] Pavel Rojtberg 284131 drift conversion and follow-up (opens in a new tab)
