Background
The 2004 Super Clod Buster continues the original truck's twin-motor, four-wheel-drive and four-wheel-steering layout. Its pickup body uses revised trim and graphics, while the tall stance, 165mm tires and two gearboxes integrated into the axle housings keep the Clod family recognizable. It remains a detailed monster-truck assembly kit with a substantial amount of steering and suspension hardware to put together. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).

A single steering servo operates the linked front and rear steering, and each wheel has two coil-spring friction dampers. Those mechanisms are part of the appeal, but they also explain why a new servo or a different shock needs more consideration than its headline rating. Check the linkage movement and the damper mounting arrangement before choosing changes. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The exact 58321 instructions show a three-step mechanical controller, a resistor and a separate speed-control servo. This distinguishes the 2004 package from Super Clod Buster 58518 with an electronic twin-motor controller, and from the later Clod Buster 2026. A used truck may have been converted, so identify the installed electrical equipment as well as the box number. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
Its enclosed axle gearboxes and 13T motor pinions provide a clear maintenance starting point. Keep both drives turning smoothly and verify the appropriate wiring before adding power. Bearing replacement and steering changes can be planned around the original instructions, while custom chassis or axle-servo conversions need their own supporting hardware and clearance checks. How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Service reference
Checked task pages, documented requirements and recorded factory fluids for this model. Follow the manufacturer's procedure for the exact assembly and revision.
DifferentialsReference
Twin axle gear differentials
Exact Tamiya kit 58321; historical mechanical/electrical package retained. Owner-selected radio and later conversions excluded.
Exact front and rear axle gearbox assembly, including the bevel differentials and separate motor drives.
- Tamiya 58321 factory instructions, PDF pp. 12-13 (opens in a new tab)Assembly drawing, not a rebuild procedure. Document: Tamiya 58321 exact factory-authored kit manual.

This is a partial service reference. Check the cited instructions for the full procedure and configuration-specific requirements. Mechanical tasks may need additional parts, quantities and reused hardware beyond the items listed here. Manual reviewed 2026-10-16.
MotorReference
Two stock motor/pinion installations
Exact Tamiya kit 58321; historical mechanical/electrical package retained. Owner-selected radio and later conversions excluded.
Pinion positioning and stock motor installation in both axle gearboxes. This does not establish a different motor or controller rating.

ShocksReference
Spring friction dampers
Exact Tamiya kit 58321; historical mechanical/electrical package retained. Owner-selected radio and later conversions excluded.
Friction-damper spring, shaft and rubber-tubing assembly. These are not oil-filled shocks; no shock oil is specified.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Use the 58321 mechanical-controller instructions as this edition's baseline. Center and check both the steering and throttle-servo mechanisms before closing the body. If the truck has already received an electronic controller, identify that equipment separately instead of following the resistor wiring for a different system.[1] Exact Tamiya 58321 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
Both axle gearboxes use 13T motor pinions and their own differential assemblies. Position the pinions with the supplied tool, check free rotation and keep the manual's bearing and bushing types separate. A part marked 1260 is a size reference, not proof that every location already has a ball bearing.[1] Exact Tamiya 58321 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)

Retain the supplied friction-damper layout for an initial running check. Verify smooth axle articulation and steering movement before changing shocks or servo position. A custom chassis, axle-mounted servo or oil-damper conversion needs the appropriate supporting brackets and clearance checks; those changes are not established by the stock assembly manual.[1] Exact Tamiya 58321 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
