Background
The original Clod Buster is Tamiya's 1987 twin-motor monster-truck kit, with a Chevrolet-style pickup body above large 165mm tires. Each rigid axle carries its own 540-type motor and enclosed gearbox. That arrangement gives the truck a recognizable shape and a different mechanical layout from a single-motor truck with a central transmission and propeller shafts. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).

Four-wheel steering turns the front and rear wheels in opposite directions through a centrally mounted steering servo. The suspension uses two spring dampers at each wheel, giving eight in total, but they are friction units rather than oil-filled shocks. The result is a detailed large-tire truck whose steering linkages and axle movement are important parts of the build. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
This original edition includes a three-step mechanical speed controller. Its resistor, wiring and controller servo belong to the period electrical package and should not be confused with the electronic controllers supplied in later Super Clod Buster and 2026 kits. The manual's high-power and economy wiring arrangements also need to be identified before changing the motors or controller. Factory instructions (opens in a new tab).
The Clod family has remained a basis for scale-monster and custom builds, but a restoration does not need to become a full chassis conversion. Start with loose steering joints, free axle articulation and the condition of the existing bearings and bushings. Retain the exact 58065 body and mechanical references where originality matters, and treat later family parts as numbered candidates to check. Original assembly and parts (opens in a new tab). How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Single report uses one outside source. It is useful as a starting figure, with the source and calculation described in the note.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.

Build and setup
Factory setup guide for this configuration.
Start with both original 58065 axle gearboxes turning freely. Each motor uses a 13T pinion, positioned with the illustrated tool before its gearbox is closed. Check the bearing and bushing locations individually; the manual includes different types and sizes, so a complete-bearing purchase should be matched to the actual assembly.[1] Exact Tamiya 58065 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
Check the linked steering before choosing a stronger servo. Center the servo, build the rods to the shown arrangement and make sure the front and rear uprights move without binding. Play in the long linkage or contact at full travel needs mechanical attention before a torque increase can help.[1] Exact Tamiya 58065 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)

The eight supplied dampers are spring friction units. Assemble their shafts, springs and rubber-tubing spacers as shown, with free axle movement. Oil-damper or axle-mounted-servo conversions change the original arrangement and need their own mount and clearance checks. The original mechanical controller and resistor also need their exact wiring reference.[1] Exact Tamiya 58065 factory assembly and setup instructions (opens in a new tab)
