Shorter gearing changes the performance balance

The 223S keeps 2S/3S capability but moves from a 20T to a 16T fitted pinion. Combined with the lower 3100Kv motor rating, that gives about 22.5% less ideal road speed at equal voltage and tire diameter. Shorter gearing gives more torque multiplication and reduces the load imposed by a tall ratio, although actual acceleration and running temperature depend on the motor, battery, surface and setup.

RC-TNT's 223S review found stable ground handling with DSC on its minimum setting, but less throttle control over the nose during jumps. The reviewer linked that loss of in-air authority to the center differential and suggested thicker differential oil for bigger jumps. That is a useful tradeoff: the stock setup suited flowing ground-level driving better than the large-air driving the reviewer wanted from it.

Look beyond the metal center gear

The same RC-TNT test also shows where everyday costs remain. After a hard 3S session, the reviewer found cracks and scuffs in the body, rim damage and body mounts that were harder to latch. The taller side guards had kept grass away from the fans effectively. That combination matters more to ownership than a blanket durability rating: useful dirt protection can coexist with body and mounting wear.

For a used V3, compare condition and expected repairs with the newer truck's complete price. For an existing owner, the shared front and rear driveshaft listings are useful continuity. Moving to 223S electronics is a separate cost decision because its controller and receiver share a unit, so check the radio arrangement before replacing the speed control.

Price context and what the newer truck includes

The V3's July 2020 U.S. announcement listed US$319.99. Horizon's 223S listing checked on 15 October 2026 was US$339.99. That's a US$20 difference between those dated references, but it isn't a confirmed generation-change premium: the 223S launch price hasn't been verified here. Neither price includes the driving battery and charger.

The newer package includes the center differential, DSC assistance and revised steering and shock equipment. Whether those justify today's price gap depends on the V3 offer you're comparing with, especially if it's used. The 223S is also shorter-geared as supplied, so buying it for a higher stock top speed would miss the main changes.

A different mechanism behind the 57T spur

The V3's ARA311034 slipper assembly gives way to the 223S ARA311165 center differential. Both carry a 57T gear, but the differential allows the front and rear drives to turn at different speeds, while the slipper limits torque through its friction surfaces. The newer module also includes ARA311169 power-module parts and the ARA311192 motor mounting plate.

That assembly change matters when a spur wears out. The 223S uses the ARA311167 center-differential spur; a V3 slipper needs the gear intended for its own mechanism. For a conversion, include the surrounding housing, mounting and drive connections in the parts plan rather than treating the spur as the whole job.

The fitted shocks and the options tell different stories

The 223S drawing identifies ARA-2373 and ARA-2372 as its shock assemblies. Other shock sets also appear in its references, including the optional ARA330677. That gives you more than one listing to consider, but the axle drawing is what identifies the fitted assembly when ordering a shaft, seal or complete replacement.

There is useful continuity elsewhere: AR310780 front and AR310864 rear driveshaft sets appear in both editions' lists. Keep that shared listing separate from a shock or suspension conversion, which also depends on mounts and available travel. A replacement shock's stated length and supplied oil describe that set, rather than automatically establishing either truck's factory setup.

DSC and a new servo change the control setup

V3 pairs the S651 servo with the ARA340181 23T saver; 223S uses the S662 with the ARA340215 25T saver. Match the saver to the servo's output spline if either is being replaced. On a used Senton, the installed pair is worth identifying because an earlier owner may already have changed it.

The 223S SPMXSE8010RX combines speed control and the receiver, adding Dynamic Stability Control steering assistance. V3 keeps its BLX100 controller separate from the receiver. That layout affects an electronics swap: a replacement speed controller may need a separate compatible receiver and the wiring space to install it.

Which edition makes sense for you?

The 223S suits a buyer who wants adjustable steering assistance and the center-differential driving package. Its shorter gearing and the RC-TNT review's air-control tradeoff are worth considering if your priority is outright speed or large jumps. Start with the stock setup before deciding whether differential or suspension tuning is needed.

For a V3 owner, compare the specific benefit you want with the full cost of changing trucks or converting parts. Familiar shafts provide useful repair continuity, but the center drive, fitted shocks and electronics need their own references. MEGA, BOOST and older 6S Sentons have different equipment.
