Big Rock 3S vs 223S

A modest speed change, a more useful control change

The V3 and 223S both run on 2S or 3S. Combining the newer 3100Kv motor with its 16T pinion gives about 3.3% more ideal road speed than the V3's 3200Kv motor and 15T pinion, with equal voltage and tire diameter. That's a small theoretical difference, so the center differential and DSC assistance deserve more attention than an expectation of a major power increase.

The new differential allows the front and rear drives to turn at different speeds, and DSC adds adjustable steering correction when the truck loses direction. RC Driver's February 2025 review describes the 223S as a versatile truck for both new and experienced bashers. That supports its broad use, but doesn't establish that it corners or lands better than a V3 in a controlled comparison.

Judge the complete drivetrain and the truck in front of you

The center differential replaces the V3 slipper assembly, and the steering equipment changes too. Those are useful reasons to identify the edition before buying repair parts. A metal-geared center assembly alone doesn't tell you whether suspension arms, tires or shock seals will last longer, particularly when driving conditions and landing loads vary so much.

If you're buying a used V3, inspect the center drive, motor mount, outdrives and suspension before comparing it with a new 223S. Wear in those areas can erase an apparent saving. For an existing owner, shared wheel-hex and differential-outdrive listings make individual repairs easier to investigate; a full center-drive conversion needs the surrounding module parts priced as well.

What the extra US$30 bought at launch

The July 2020 V3 announcement listed US$319.99. RC Driver's February 2025 Big Rock 223S review listed US$349.99, making the newer launch-period RTR price US$30 higher, or about 9%. These are nominal U.S. published prices from their respective introductions, not current offers or a verified MSRP series. Both still need a battery and charger.

The premium bought a center differential, DSC-equipped control system and revised steering setup, along with the other edition changes detailed below. That is more persuasive for someone buying a first Big Rock than the small calculated speed increase. If you already have a healthy V3, price the specific improvement you want before replacing the entire truck.

The center differential is the bigger mechanical change

V3 sends drive through ARA311034, a 57T slipper-clutch assembly. The 223S uses ARA311165, a 57T metal center differential. While the slipper can limit transmitted torque through controlled slip, the differential allows the front and rear drives to turn at different speeds. That change matters more to the mechanism than the shared spur tooth count.

A conversion therefore involves more than buying another 57T gear. The newer drawing also identifies ARA311169 power-module parts and the ARA311192 motor mounting plate. Compare the full module, mounts and drive connections when working out what a V3 would need.

The steering and electronics change together

The V3's S651 servo works with an ARA340181 23T servo saver, while the 223S pairs the S662 with an ARA340215 25T saver. That pairing is worth noting before reusing a saver or buying a replacement servo. The older 23T part appears in the newer option lists too, so the list alone won't identify the factory combination.

The control layout changes from V3's separate BLX100 controller to the 223S SPMXSE8010RX combined controller/receiver with Dynamic Stability Control steering assistance. If you replace the combined unit, the receiver function needs to be covered as well. Consider transmitter protocol, wiring and connectors together when choosing replacement electronics.

Some familiar spares, different chassis references

Both editions' references include the AR310871 14 mm wheel hex and AR310775 differential outdrives. Those shared numbers are useful when sorting a spares box or identifying a damaged part. Their scope stays with those components rather than every wheel, axle or differential assembly around them.

The chassis drawings identify ARA320608 on V3 and ARA-1083 on 223S. Similar long-wheelbase descriptions aren't enough to establish that the numbers are aliases. For a chassis or suspension repair, work from the exact drawing and the installed hardware; the table below puts the relevant listings side by side.

Which edition makes sense for you?

The 223S makes the clearest case for someone buying a Big Rock who wants the center differential and DSC together. Its launch-period US$30 premium bought those control and drivetrain changes, while the calculated speed difference is small. Judge today's offer against the condition and equipment of the actual V3 alternative.

For an existing V3 owner, shared wheel-hex and outdrive listings help with routine repairs. Keeping a sound truck is a reasonable choice if its driving already suits you. A conversion needs the surrounding center-module parts priced as well; Big Rock 6S and earlier editions have different equipment.
