Background
The original Midnight Pumpkin uses a customized Ford F-100 pickup body over Tamiya's compact rear-wheel-drive monster chassis. Its 1987 appearance combines the detailed molded shell with 115 mm tires and a high stance. This original 58070 kit is separate from later metallic and black editions. The factory instructions specify a box-type chassis, coil-spring suspension, a sealed differential gearbox and a supplied 540 motor. Speed control is the original three-step mechanical arrangement. The body shape changes the model's presentation and mounting parts, so a shared chassis family does not make every Lunch Box or later Pumpkin body piece the same. Original instructions (opens in a new tab).
For restoration, inspect the rear axle mounts, springs and controller before adding cosmetic parts. Keep a record of the fitted body mounts and wheel finish when ordering replacements. A carefully rebuilt runner can use modern electronics, while a period-correct build should preserve and service the original control arrangement. Original instructions (opens in a new tab).

How to read these figures
- Stock is as the vehicle ships.
- Calculated is worked from the stock figures on this page rather than stored beside them, so the two cannot drift apart.
- Not applicable means the vehicle does not come with it, like the motor on a roller or the tires on a race kit.
- Not published means it exists but no source we could find prints it.
Upgrades and setup
A modern electronic controller can be a practical change for an original Pumpkin intended for regular driving. A 2005 running report described smoother acceleration after replacing the mechanical controller. Treat that as an individual result, not a guaranteed runtime or handling improvement. Check controller mounting, wiring and motor compatibility, and preserve the original hardware if period correctness matters to the build.[1] TamiyaClub 58070 original-model reports (opens in a new tab)
