Background

M-01 established Tamiya's small front-wheel-drive chassis format with a front-mounted motor and compact body proportions. The factory Rover Mini Cooper instructions identify kit 58149 and show independent double-wishbone suspension, coil-spring shocks and a Type 540 motor. Factory reference (opens in a new tab).

The layout makes a small road-car build mechanically distinct from a full-width four-wheel-drive touring car. Its gearbox, suspension and steering remain accessible through the assembly drawings, with separate references for the Mini body and chassis parts. A different body or a later M-chassis name does not automatically identify the same wheelbase or mounting arrangement. Factory reference (opens in a new tab).

When restoring an M-01, inspect the front drive shafts, differential, bearing surfaces and steering joints before selecting electronics. The instructions show period radio and controller arrangements, so choose any replacement system as a complete installation. Keep the actual kit's wheels, tires and gearing together rather than transferring measurements from the M-03, M-05 or another compact chassis. Factory reference (opens in a new tab).
