Tamiya's CW-01 is a 1/12 two-wheel-drive big-tire chassis with a box frame, a sealed gearbox with a differential and a wheelie bar, sold under the Lunch Box, Midnight Pumpkin and Mitsubishi Pajero bodies.

Every kit on it prints 14.7:1 with the stock 10T pinion, on a short 207 mm wheelbase. The front uses independent swing axles and the rear a rolling rigid axle on coil springs, so hard throttle on a grippy surface lifts the front wheels. The pinion, motor and tires come with each kit rather than with the chassis, so enter yours in the gearing tool.

Pinion The small gear on the motor shaft. Fewer teeth gear the car shorter: quicker acceleration, lower top speed and a cooler motor. More teeth do the opposite. On a chassis sold as kits, each kit brings its own. Spur The large gear the pinion drives. A bigger spur with the same pinion gears the car shorter. Pinion and spur must have the same pitch, or tooth size, to mesh. Transmission & axle Every reduction after the spur, multiplied together: transmission, differentials and axle gears. It is fixed by the design; the gearing you change is the pinion and spur. Final drive How many times the motor turns for one turn of the wheels. A higher number is shorter gearing: more acceleration and pulling power, less top speed.

Tire diameter The outside diameter of the mounted tire, tread to tread. A taller tire covers more ground each turn, which gears the car taller. At high speed tires can balloon and grow, so the real gearing gets taller as the car goes faster.

How these numbers were settled

The CW-01 is Tamiya's two-wheel-drive big-tire chassis: a box frame, front swing axles, a rear rolling rigid axle, a sealed gearbox with a differential and a wheelie bar.

The Lunch Box Black Edition manual (58546) fits a 10T pinion (BT2, step 9, p. 7) that drives a counter gear listed without a tooth count (parts code list, p. 20), so neither the spur nor the stage after it is published and the printed total is the only gearing fact: every CW-01 kit page prints 'ギヤ比=14.7:1' (Pajero 58727, Lunch Box Red Edition 47402, Black Edition 58546, Midnight Pumpkin Black Edition 58547).
The kit pages give a 207mm wheelbase.
Tamiya sells the Lunch Box and Midnight Pumpkin as 1/12 and the Pajero as 1/10 on the same chassis.
Kits: standard and planned runs on Tamiya Japan's CW-01 list; the Blue Style, Unimog 406 Wheelie, Pajero Wheelie, Gold Edition and Metallic Special re-runs predate 2015 and are left off.
