This rebuild lets the front wheels turn faster than the rear wheels, which can help the front pull the truck up obstacles. It retains the XF case and primary drive, with a choice of two factory rear ratios rather than a complete replacement transmission.

Installation notes

  • The factory SE page 16 explicitly requires 42025, 42027, 91563, 42026 or 42031, and 42028 or 42032. This route uses the plastic 42026 and 42028 sets; do not mix in a bare 55T/25T set and assume its output interface is identical.
  • 42025 supplies one shaft and two 2x9 mm pins. 42027 supplies the long output, short output and drive-gear shim, but does not include gear screws or bearings. Remove the stock one-piece 42320 output.
  • Keep the front 20T top / 28T idler / 52T drive arrangement. Assemble the rear as 27T/53T for about 5.7% front overdrive, or 26T/54T for about 11.83%. Those are alternate settings in one recipe, not two chassis conversions.
  • Reuse four serviceable 31350 M2.5x10 screws on the front drive gear. The added rear drive gear needs four 41077 M2.5x14 screws; one factory ten-piece pack covers them. Seat one new 10x15x4 bearing in each split-output support as drawn.
  • One four-piece 91563 pack supplies the two 10x15x4 mm bearings shown in the complete output assembly; two remain spare. Seat the short-output bearing fully as drawn. The complete output diagram uses two bearings in total; an additional case-bearing pair is not required. Small top-shaft/idler bushings may remain serviceable; replacing all small bearings is the separate bearing recipe.
  • Retain the 50T spur, running gear, motor, pinion and functioning slipper unless separately changed. Overdrive is a front/rear speed difference, not a vehicle-speed gain. Check gear orientation, shim seating, free rotation, driveshaft engagement and temperature.
